Puppies move around a lot, so their fur gets dirty.
Here's when and how often you can bathe your puppy!
When can you bathe your puppy?
It's recommended that you bathe your puppy after he's finished his vaccinations at about two months of age.
Before vaccinations, your puppy's immune system is weak, so there's a risk of him getting sick. Also, some puppies have reported getting sick immediately after vaccinations, so it's best to avoid bathing them.
You can safely assume your pet can take a bath or shower about two weeks after completing its second-month vaccinations.
If its fur becomes soiled before then, wipe it down with pet wipes or similar. Avoid using products containing alcohol, as they may irritate the skin.
Getting your pet's entire body wet can make it sick, but if it's just a small area, like its bottom or paws, it can be dried quickly. If pet wipes or similar products don't clean it, you can wet only the soiled area and clean it with pet shampoo or similar.
How Often Should You Bath Your Puppy?
As a general rule, you should bathe your puppy about twice a month. Bathing them only when they start to smell seems fine.
Bathing takes a lot of energy, so bathing them every day is not good for their health. For puppies that don't like water, it can be stressful, so bathing them less frequently is probably best.
However, if your dog has a skin disease or mites have infested the area, you may need to bathe it more frequently. If your dog is ill, consult your veterinarian beforehand.
Things you'll need for a bath
Bathtub (suitable for your dog's size)
Since you'll be shampooing and drying your dog in the bathtub, choose one that's a little larger.
Shower (37-38°C)
If the temperature is too high, it can damage the skin. It also strips away essential sebum, so it's best not to use a temperature higher than this.
Slicker Brush
Use this to remove dust and dirt beforehand. It can also be used to groom your pet's coat after shampooing.
Leaving hair that goes against the direction of the hair growth can cause skin problems.
Dog Shampoo
If you're concerned about odor or if your dog is very dirty, use dog shampoo.
Towel
After shampooing, towel dry your dog before using a hair dryer.
It's possible that your dog may have mites or other mites on it, so we recommend using a towel specifically for dogs.
Hair Dryer
Towel drying alone will not completely dry your dog, so you'll need a hair dryer.
Human hair dryers tend to be too hot, so if possible, get a hair dryer specifically designed for dogs.
How to Shampoo
You can shampoo your puppy the same way you would an adult dog.
1. Brushing
First, brush your dog's body to lightly remove dust and dirt.
Brushing helps the dog shampoo penetrate its fur more easily, allowing you to thoroughly wash it.
2. Washing the Paws
Start by washing the paws to avoid startling them.
Turn down the water pressure in the shower, let the water soak in thoroughly, and lather up the shampoo. First, massage the foam into your dog's paws. After washing the paws, gradually move on to the fur.
3. Wash the buttocks and inner thighs
The inner thighs are a delicate area, so you may want to dilute the shampoo a little.
Lather up more thoroughly than you did the paws, lift the tail, and start washing around the buttocks.
After lightly rinsing the tail, gently wash the inner thighs. The inner thighs are a soft area, so be careful not to use too much pressure.
4. Wash the Chest and Back
The chest and back are large areas that tend to accumulate dirt, so a slightly larger amount of shampoo is fine. Lather up well and massage the area thoroughly.
Depending on the breed, sebum and dust can easily accumulate around the neck, so we recommend using a slicker brush.
5. Wash the Face and Head
Finally, wash the face and head. You may also want to dilute the shampoo.
Be careful not to get it in your pet's eyes, nose, or mouth. If your pet resists washing, don't force it; simply wipe it with a wet towel. It's also recommended to clean its ears at the same time.
6. Rinse the Shampoo
Rinse the shampoo in the reverse order of how you washed it. Rinse thoroughly and carefully, as any residue left behind can lead to skin problems.
To dry your pet, remove as much moisture as possible with a towel, then dry it on a gentle cycle with a hair dryer.
It's best to dry it in the following order: back → butt → belly → paws → tail.
