Today, we'll introduce some recommended commercial dog foods!
Do you just give your dog whatever's cheap, thinking that anything will do?
You know that food without additives or artificial colors is the best, but sometimes the high cost can make it difficult to afford.
For those of you who feel this way, we'll introduce some commercial dog foods today!
There's a reason why commercial dog food is cheap. However, if you keep the key points in mind, you can feed your dog a healthy diet. First, we'll explain what you need to pay attention to when choosing commercially available dog food!
How to Choose Commercial Dog Food

There are three things to look for when choosing commercially available dog food.
- The main ingredient must be meat.
Be wary of products that don't list meat as the main ingredient, such as "4D meat" or "XX by-product." You'd want to feed your dog human-grade food, if possible. 4D meat, in particular, may contain meat that humans can't eat, so be especially careful.
・Dogs do not contain too much grain.
Dogs have very few enzymes to digest grains. Wheat and corn, in particular, are harmless to humans but can cause allergies in dogs.
If possible, choose gluten-free foods that do not contain gluten, such as cooked grains or wheat, or grain-free foods! If this is not possible, choose foods with a low grain content.
・Does not contain unnecessary additives
Many dog foods contain unnecessary additives. Among these, food colorings are the most unnecessary for dogs who don't care about color. For example, "Red No. XX" and "Blue No. XX." These ingredients are used solely for coloring purposes and are therefore unnecessary for dogs who don't care about the color of their food. In particular, "Red No. 102" has been reported to "may worsen the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children." In Europe, when food coloring with Red No. 102 is used, a warning must be displayed stating, "May have an adverse effect on children's attention and behavior." It seems that there is a mandatory requirement to include this information. Apparently, this does not apply in Japan.
It seems that some dogs are also born with ADHD, so caution may be necessary when feeding this to such dogs. This is only a story about European children, and it is unclear whether it actually harms dogs, but given such stories, it may be best to be careful. Additionally, the antioxidants "BHA" and "BHT" are not problematic within the prescribed amounts, but consuming more than the prescribed amount has been identified as carcinogenic.
The prescribed amounts mentioned above are as follows:
- The total of BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin should be below 150 mg/kg.
- Ethoxyquin alone should be below 75 mg/kg.
It's fine as long as you follow the prescribed limits, but since it's something your pet will be eating every day, it's still a cause for concern. It's best to avoid it as much as possible.
